Mar Bello Apartments

Context

Both the building and the landscape design references the abstract forms created by waves and ripples along the neighbouring Scarborough beach, and aims to create spaces that echo the local characteristics. Natural earthy toned WA materials, soft curvy linear forms & lush green planting – are proposed to create a warm comfortable living space.

Description

The main tower reflects the curved forms that echo Inter War Art Deco architectural styles dating from Scarborough’s early development.

Light architectural elements are incorporated as slender steel balustrades, lightweight perforated screens and vertical battened screens. These elements along with the selection of materials are mindfully light-coloured, appearing pale weathered or bright white’ to reflect the sun-drenched conditions of a beach environment.

Shading devices are incorporated as light permeable screens and by providing rows of vertical rods for climbing plants. Integrating landscape as shade device softens the built edge and blurs the separation of inside (building) and outside (environment), lessening the visual presence of the building.
